Learn how to feed your planner addiction while staying within a budget.


Don’t get me wrong, I love perusing all the planner accounts on Instagram, but I’ve always been the kind of person to do my own thing. Especially when I’m doing said thing on a budget. I’m a part-time librarian, so we really rely on Husband’s full-time job. But, just because we keep our purse strings pulled a bit tight doesn’t mean I can’t decorate the hell out of my planner.

It all really comes down to reusing things most crafters already have in their supply. I do buy things on rare occasion, but I also rely heavily on my local public library (also coincidentally my workplace). A library?! Oh, yes! Read on to find all my juicy tips, tricks, and suggestions to help you strengthen your planner game!


Your Planner

My planner goes everywhere with me. Work, meetings, the grocery store- everywhere. So, it matters to me that my planner will stand up to being tossed into my tote bag (and under my desk, and under my rolling desk chair…). The second stipulation is customization. If I can’t completely change it then I will get bored of it fast. I love to add flare to my things, but not when the planner sets me back $60.

My solution: I simply use an A5 three ring binder!  It’s simple, clean, and serves it’s purpose well. I can add my own covers, and decorate literally every inch of it while trusting the rigid structure to protect my ideas. It’s perfect!

The Takeaway: Planning shouldn’t be about what brands you use. It should be all about your brand.

Why I Create

This post lived in my draft folder all weekend. I’ve scratched it, restarted it, and still had trouble nailing down my answers to a simple question: why do I love to create?  It’s an important piece of my puzzle and today, I’m going to share why this chronically badass chick likes to hoard paper and fabric, and do crazy things with them.

I think first and foremost my creativity allows me to express myself on my own terms. I sew my own clothes, make my own printables, and customized my one-of-a-kind planner all in an attempt to express my dreams, my loves, and my emotions.

And sometimes, reality is too frightening. As the morning news becomes more and more tragic, I find myself turning to my sketch pad or my stories to try and make sense of the things happening around me.

Obviously, creating is also a coping mechanism for me. I think it was this new role that art took on that made it so powerful and important for me. My body is not my own, but what I create with it is.

Beauty will save the world.

I think we can all agree that the world needs more beauty. If I can improve someone’s day with an uplifting photo or simple project, then I will try my best to do so.

Take It With You: Portable Moodboards

Or, “Duh, I Should Have Started Doing This A Billion Years Ago.”

Every Sunday, I sit down and write about how I’m making moodboards work for me, and how I jazz them up. Today, I’m going to break one of my own rules…and go against technology. Ah, I know! It’s scary! It will be brief, though, and then I will apologize to my wifi router.


There are times when wifi sucks and I’m too cheap to turn on my mobile data (or the network at work decides it hates me). My moodboard does me very, very little good if it’s stuck “in the cloud.” I curse at my phone too much as it is (you hear that, LG?), so to save it a bit of stress, I turned my planner into my moodboard.

That answer probably stared me in the eyes for months, but I only consciously put it into action today. Yay new beginnings!  When I say my whole planner, I mean the cover, the inserts – the entire, flipping thing. That is, after all, why I named Sunday “Planner Day” in my head. It’s easy to customize; one more reason I’m loving my transition from snazzy planner to an A5 three-ringed binder.

How To Kick A Bad Habit + Freebie

Bad habits – we’ve all got ’em. These habits most likely end up on New Year’s resolutions, but it’s almost June and I don’t know about you, but my bad habits are still hanging around. I am absolutely positive, though, that we can finally kick our habits to the curb! To help myself become hyper aware of things I need to work on, I created a planner insert to track several things, including my medication (super important!). Scroll down to find the insert!


Most of the research I found through Google suggests breaking out a notebook and jotting down details about your bad habit. Tracking it with my handy printable takes care of that, plus it’s the perfect size to carry with you wherever you go. Personally, I pick at hangnails and consequently use a lot of bandaids. But, every time Husband points it out, I don’t even realize that I’m actively allowing myself to indulge in this bad habit. Paying a lot of attention to your habit is key to kicking it.

It’s also incredibly important to understand why you’ve developed the habit. My poor fingers really took a beating as a way to cope with anxiety during my teen years. Stress and boredom are two of the most common causes of bad habits, so my situation is fairly common. If it’s a particular event or condition that triggers your habit, try eliminating that from your day, or finding another way of coping (like a stress ball!).

Look into the details of your habit; where is just as important as why. If you want to stop eating fast food, but drive right past dozens of restaurants, take a different route home to avoid the temptation. Don’t make it easy for yourself to slip into the habit. I never drink enough water, namely because Husband and I stock up on soda. Rather than buying the 24 pack, I’m considering buying only a six pack of pop so I have to ration myself (oh yea, it’s going to be hard). I am making my environment suit my habit, which has to be fixed before any progress is going to happen.

I’m challenging myself this week to be kinder to my hands, to remember to take all of my medicine, and to drink more water. The planner insert is sized for an A5 planner, but I have no problem creating other sizes!

Making Micro Resolutions

Looking at my schedule for the next couple of months makes me cringe. There’s so much to do that I can’t even find where I should begin, let alone figure out the best path through it all. That is until I found inspiration in my planner. Oh yea, that’s right, my obsessive decorating finally paid off!

The list already inspired a small poster for my desk!

The latest #ListersGottaList challenge asked for the best advice I’ve seen or heard. I filled two inserts full of magazine clippings with positive and uplifting messages. As I was merrily glueing away, I started wondering if making empowering notes for myself would actually help my situation. Turns out, it does! And there’s science to prove it.

Creating messages, vision boards, inserts, etc. as a means of motivation is called visualization. The process works because:

“…neurons in our brains, those electrically excitable cells that transmit information, interpret imagery as equivalent to a real-life action. When we visualize an act, the brain generates an impulse that tells our neurons to “perform” the movement. This creates a new neural pathway…that primes our body to act in a way consistent to what we imagined…”

Using this method to influence my mood, energy level, and focus is going to be put to the test. Rather than looking at one huge task, I’m going to mix smaller resolutions with positive images in the hopes that my incredibly scary looking to-do list will become magically more manageable.
